Recess may not be the same for a while, at least for the students at Garibaldi Highlands Elementary (GHE) school in Squamish. Staff and students arrived at school on Monday June 8th to find that part of the playground had been burned in a fire over the weekend.

Principal Paul Lorette says the supporting structure, climbing wall and 2 slides were damaged in the fire.

The school district is making arrangements to have a temporary fence installed around the structure. In the meantime, the playground structure is taped off and is unsafe. Thankfully, neither the lower playground, nor the school building itself was impacted in the fire. Staff and students will be evaluating options to address the replacement/repair of the playground as soon as possible.

This incident is under investigation; if you have any information please contact Squamish RCMP
