The District of Squamish has closed a local trail to ensure user safety.

The District says efforts to maintain the Crumpit Creek Cruiser Trail, in Valleycliffe were ineffective and that the creek has consistently washed out the trail, even after $25,000 was spent rebuilding the path last year. Falling trees and branches are also said to be a concern.

According to the District greater investment is needed for a more complete solutions, that would require input from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Ministry of Environment. Flooding is also a concern for the area and will need to be addressed.

The trail will therefore be closed until further notice while District staff explore options. The closure is also to demonstrate fiscal responsibility as it is currently not cost-effective to maintain the trail with band-aid solutions.
