An organization that introduces individuals with a disability to sport, recreation and therapeutic sport programming will be making its way to Squamish this spring.

The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program (WASP) has announced that they have received funding to setup a ‘Leisure Buddy Program’ at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The programs that WASP provides are accessible to both children and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities.

The organisation has been in the Whistler community for the past 16 years, and has helped to assist athletes who have gone on to become Paralympians. This is the first time programming has been extended to Squamish.

Squamish Program Coordinator, Christiana Dürfeld says with Brennan Park’s already existing programs they are “able to offer a volunteer to assist individuals that are a little more higher functioning and get involved with the social aspect of programming as well”. Programs currently available to receive assistance include gymnastics, swimming, soccer, basketball, music, skating, dance, physical literary classes and some day camps.

WASP is currently on the hunt for reliable volunteers to help with the new program that are keen to be active and help kids learn to love a sport. The organisation is also trying to find more kids that would be eligible and interested in participating. Dürfeld hopes to have participants in programs shortly after Easter.
