BC Parks has announced that domestic animals (dogs and other pets) will no longer be allowed in Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.

The government department says the area has seen a huge increase in visitation over the years, and that includes dog visits – which has led to issues with visitor experience, public health concerns and conservation efforts.

They say even the sounds or scents of dogs can cause birds and other animals like pikas to look for different habitat. On social media the department says the change will help them protect the park, its wildlife and those who visit it.

The new rules will come into effect on May 15th and will be in effect year round.
