As many Squamish residents are aware, 5 townhouse units in Emerald Place Estates were affected by a residential fire on December 13th. The fire displaced 12 people.

Mountain FM has been in contact with the Red Cross to see how we can help our community. The Red Cross has learnt that most of the people living in the affected units had insurance and do not require donations of items. They are reminding everyone of the importance of having insurance, and how much it helps when disasters happen unexpectedly. Please make sure you are properly insured this cold winter season.

Some residents have requested financial donations to help offset the cost of the insurance deductible. Others have suggested that community members who have a desire to make donations could consider giving to organizations supporting struggling families in the corridor.

One resident that had their unit severely damaged did not have insurance and has lost everything.

If you would like to donate either cash or a physical item please see how below.

  • Cash donations
    • An account at Van City has been setup where you can make financial donations to Squamish Savings “In trust for Emerald Place fire” Account #10100075492715
  • Physical donations
    • The resident who was not insured and lost everything has requested the following items.
      • Household items e.g. furniture (living room, kitchen, bedroom etc), dishes, cookware and kitchen items, linens, towels, bedding etc.
      • Assistance finding a new place to live.
        • Ideally a ground level apartment.
      • Telephones
        • Cellphone & landline.
  • Donation drop-off
    • You can drop-off smaller donations to the Squamish Mountain FM studio located at Unit 202 – 40147 Glenalder Place, Monday to Friday between 8am-2pm. Please e-mail marshall.whitsed@rci.rogers.com prior to dropping items at Mountain FM and we will respond letting you know if the item is still needed.
    • Please do not drop-off items that cannot be transported in an SUV. For larger items e.g. large furniture please e-mail marshall.whitsed@rci.rogers.com and we will connect you with evacuees if the item is still needed.
    • Deadline for dropping off items at Mountain FM is December 21st at 2pm. Our goal is to deliver the items the following day, in time for Christmas.
    • Please do not drop-off items without first e-mailing Mountain FM to see if the item is still needed.

Help us help those in need this Christmas in our community.

Please note the Red Cross does not accept physical donations. Both the Red Cross and Mountain FM are not associated with the financial donation drive in this particular situation. The Red Cross is not associated with Mountain FM, but has shared information in order to connect the community with those in need.
