Following a nationwide report from Food Banks Canada stating that reliance on food banks is growing in almost every province in Canada – including BC. The Squamish Food Bank says their numbers have remained steady over the last year.

Food Bank Manager Christina Rupp says they’re seeing success stories of clients who are now working above minimum wage jobs.

However, Rupp says the Food Bank is now open an extra day. The organisation will open its doors on the second Wednesday of each month for Family Day, for those with children under the ages of 16. Rupp says “This enables people to pick up extra dairy, eggs, produce, bread and baby supplies. We saw the need to provide an extra helping hand to the children in our community”.

According to the Food Banks Canada report, 103,000 BC residents rely on a food bank, 32% of them are children.
