Skiers and snowboarders are being reminded to stay in-bounds unless properly equipped for backcountry travel.

That is the message from Whistler RCMP this week. The warning comes following an incident where multiple members of the public had to be assisted to safety from a local mountain.

Police say on February 17th they received a report of two skiers outside the ski area boundary on Whistler Mountain that were lost. They believed their location to be approximate 500 meters above Cheakamus Lake.

Communicating by phone Ski Patrol was able to provide the lost skiers with directions to a summer parking lot at the end of the Cheakamus Lake Forest Service Road, where they were met by two RCMP officers who were patrolling in the area on snowmobiles.

At the same time, the officers encountered two snowboarders who were also lost. All four were transported safely back to Whistler.

You can find information on what gear to take into the backcountry here.
