The first sizable wildfire was sparked over the weekend north of Pemberton.

According to the BC Wildfire Service the fire that is next to Highway 99 near Joffre Lakes Provincial Park is just over 8 hectares in size and is being held. It is believed to be human caused.

The fire is a good reminder that the wildfire season is already upon us and the public should remember to take precautions when outdoors. Nearly half of all wildfires in the province are caused by human carelessness.

The public is advised to always check for bans and restrictions before starting a fire, camp responsibility by keeping fires under 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres as well as keeping a shovel or water nearby and creating a firebreak. You should also ensure ashes are cool to touch before leaving a campfire.

If you suspect a wildfire call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cell phone.
