A Squamish local who has dedicated her life to rescuing horses has been recognized by a national publication.

Horse Canada announces annually a ‘Hero of the Horse’ award, which sees the public nominate and vote for a hero.

Kris Latham of Second Chance Cheekeye Ranch received the magazine’s 2018 award. She says she is “totally honoured by the award”. Latham established the ranch in 2016 with the help of volunteers, and aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home horses in need.

Since November 2016 the ranch has rescued 47 horses and re-homed 21. The animals all come from various backgrounds and situations.
