Details

Sylvain Saudan, ‘skieur dìmpossible’ the true father of extreme skiing will be at the Arts Center April 8th!

Watch the epic 1972 film of Saudan’s first ascent and ski descent of the South-West Face of Denali (Mt McKinley). Following the screening, there will be opportunity for a question and answer period with the legendary man himself.

Sylvain Saudan is the true father of extreme skiing. When Sylvain skied Chamonix’s ultra-steep 55 degree Spencer Couloir in 1968 he achieved what was never deemed possible before on skis. He later skied many impressive first descents including The Eiger, Mt McKinley’s South-West Face, and Mt Blanc De Tacul.

He became one of the few to be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the first ski descent of an 8,000 meter peak (Hidden Peak) in 1982.

It is no wonder that the steepest run on Blackcomb was for years named THE SAUDAN COULOIR.

Mt Saudan’s last visit to British Columbia was by invitation to go and ski Mt Waddington, BC’s highest peak, in 1989.
